"I love photographing in the spring. The landscape is just coming alive after a long winter's slumber. There are signs of new life everywhere. This foal, a newborn less than a week old, was resting in the grass not far from its mother. I was immediately drawn to the profile, the classical 'S' curve from ancient art. When I developed this image in the darkroom, I wanted the line to speak powerfully to the viewer. This was no easy task, however, as the film had captured the entire scene: horse, grass, and all. Using traditional darkroom developing techniques I spent three days in the darkroom trying to achieve the perfect print. Twenty three work prints later, the darkroom magic led me to this final print as you see it now."
